How a game plays

Every lot is a decision. The reveal tells you if you were right.

Genuine screens from the live public beta on BOLT Play. The £100m is a virtual squad-building budget inside the game. It is not a cash prize and nothing is won.

  1. Bid, raise or pass

A player comes up. You see your budget, the reserve you still need for empty places and how they fit your shape. Push on, or hold your nerve for the next lot.

BOLT £100M Auction desktop bidding screen: Lot 10, David Beckham, midfielder, opening bid £1m, bid buttons for £1m, £2m and £5m and a Pass button, with a £94m budget, two of sixteen places filled and an auction feed.
Lot 10 on desktop: £94m left, 2 of 16 places filled. View full size (opens in a new tab)
The same auction lot on a phone-width screen, with the player, opening bid and bid controls stacked.
  2. Sixteen places. One budget.

Overspend early and the last places get thin. Hold back too long and the best players are gone. Unspent money earns nothing.

  3. Then the ratings come out

When both squads are complete, ratings are revealed and each squad is scored on its starting eleven, bench and positional coverage.

Final reveal: Best-built squad, Balanced Builder. Your squad scores 83.7 overall against the computer's 91.6, with starting eleven, bench and coverage averages and the top of each starting eleven listed.
A completed auction: 83.7 against the computer's 91.6. Lower rows continue below this view. View full size (opens in a new tab)

How it works

Sixteen places. One budget. No second chances.

  1. Start with £100m

Every manager gets the same fictional budget. It is virtual, not real money, and there is no cash prize.

  2. Bid or let it go

Players come up one at a time. Push on, or hold back for the next one.

  3. Play the room

You cannot see everything your opponents are holding. Judge it from how they bid.

  4. The reveal

When the squads are complete, the final squads and ratings are revealed.
